Frets gradually develop grooves and uneven wear from playing. A fret dress levels and reshapes the existing frets, then finishes them smooth and polished.
A fret dress can reduce or eliminate fret buzz, improve playability and restore accurate intonation where worn or uneven frets are the problem.

When frets are too worn to be properly dressed, they need to be replaced. The old frets are carefully removed and new frets installed, levelled, crowned and polished.
Refretting can also be used to change fret size to suit the player's preferences. Larger frets, for example, can make string bending easier.
